earlier
that day:
-
08/08/02
just after I
arrived at John’s Café the evening of 8/8/02,
Dave arrives
-
Dave's
head is shaved
-
Later
that night, I learn that Dave had
been sexually assaulted 2 nights before
-
Eventually, much later, a pattern seems to
emerge/be suspected that, as part of this terrorism of our
community, some kind of uncharacteristic cut is done to the hair of someone
who has been sexually assaulted. For men, it is often that victim's head is
shaved
Dave
tells me of his love for me. Through my reaction, Dave learns of
my love for him and loudly, gratefully, acknowledges receipt in the same
way
-
"guardian
angel" pin incident
-
Dave
is wearing something that looks more like a woman's blouse and is very
different from the clothes that I'd noted, and Dave told me, he always
wears.
-
When Dave sits next to me, I notice that there is a pin on
the blouse, just over his chest. As I am mentioning that, before
Dave can respond Laura
Joyner, who is bartending, interrupts us and "sing-song-ly"
says, "That's a guardian angel pin," emphasizing
"guardian angel." Just then, someone comes by from the
end of the bar, passes in back us, then reaches in front of Dave and
jams the pin into Dave's chest. Dave angrily stars at the man as I
just cringe, watching Dave's face. Then the man
walks to the door to leave, but before doing so, tells Laura something
like, "Give him a drink on me." [need to see if I have
something more about this in my journal, etc.]
Laura
knows about the incident, was evidently involved somehow because
Dave was trying to get his shirt back from her - there may have also
been something in the shirt or there is something else missing as
well. Laura was taunting both he and I about it in a very arrogant
manner. - - He
wouldn't let me hear the story of exactly what happened,
emphatically saying "NO!" when I asked if it was some
interesting story I'd like to hear. But her later confided to me
that what happened was that ......... and had previously named
the men [who had also been there, that night] - some of my
best supporters but who don't know of the connection between Dave
and myself, at least until last night, when one was there and said,
as he (his name is __________ ) overheard Dave and I, "Now I
get it" or understand or something like that. Later we gave
each other the first really nice hug in a long time, and much much
needed for both of us.
But
Laura either picked up [ or was told what Dave had told about why
his head was shaved] and how things now stood between us, again and
even closer, and she was livid. She started handing Dave drinks that
she told him people just bought him.
But
it was made by [Kim]
who was there 8/8, the night of his abduction, one of the very few
still in the bar when some of the rest took place. [Kim]'s
been referred to as cafe patron K in the 3rd from last paragraph of 02/23/03
WAKE UP!!!!! - INCLUDING NL . On 8/8, [Kim]
was sitting a few empty seats away from the person who had been
identified to both [Dave] and I by
the queen be, earlier that night, as the one who had sexually
assaulted [Dave] two nights before,
who I've referred to as Jsh [Josh].
[Kim]
was actually part of the whole scene that was taking place when the
queenbee [ Laura
Joyner]
called [Dave] over to [Josh]
supposedly so that [Dave] could
finally have his shirt, that had been missing since the night of the
assault, returned to him, [Josh]
who was then trying to force a hug on [Dave]
until [Josh]
saw me approaching. It was [Kim]'s
shoulders on which [Josh]
had then thrown [Dave]'s shirt. It
was [Kim]
who then said "Ew! Get that shirt off me. It smells like [Josh]."
And it was [Kim]
who then threw it to [Dave].
[Kim]
watched as [Dave] smelled his shirt
as he pulled a barstool over to me where I stood in the middle of
the floor by the golf game machine. He sat down. [Dave]
then put his head against my chest and his arms around me and I put
my arms around him and we held each other tightly. Quietly, gently I
hope, I asked him what
had happened to him Tuesday night, i.e., 8/7, two nights earlier
and he told me. Quietly, gently I hope, I asked him if that was the
first time. He buried his head closer to my chest and said
"No." And he buried his head even deeper and he said
"But it hurts. It always, always hurts."
I
kissed his forehead and held him as close as I could, stroking his
back. He wasn't outwardly crying - I saw him outwardly crying the
following week, the day of my arrest, when he realized that that his
rescue - the spg, some of whom he hadn't even realized, until that
point, that they were involved in that. But that night, 8/8, I
wasn't outwardly crying, either. But we were both crying. We were
both crying so so much, so hard.
I
looked over him to cafe patron K [Kim]
who was seated at the bar behind his back. [Kim]
was wanting to make it obvious that she was sneering at [Dave],
or possibly at both of us. Perhaps she was only doing it because she
felt she had to please the queen bee [ Laura
Joyner].
Perhaps not. Who f______g cares!
[Even
though, at first, he
had told me emphatically that he did not want me to listen to the
story Laura Joyner starting to have people relay about the previous
Tuesday night, Dave probably eventually
let me know about the sexual assault on him, probably because he
was starting to suspect that he may be dangerously trapped in a
situation and that I should know that, if only just to try to figure
out what else may be happening to him]
[On
Sunday night, 08/11/02, three nights after Dave's abduction, in front
of a number of friends of mine, people who knew Josh, as well, I asked
Josh
if he had given Dave's shirt back to
him yet. Josh's
reaction and reply was to angrily glance down at the table and growl,
"That's MY shirt!" or "That's MY shirt now!"]
after
[Laura
Joyner had]
already called [Dave] over to [Josh]
the person she had earlier identified, through certain words, as the person
who'd raped him two nights before, who then was trying to force a hug on The
Person About Whom I've Been Speaking when I looked over and then approached
them. And The Person About Whom I've Been Speaking was then served a Jamison,
which he obviously was not drinking voluntarily. Serving him hard liquor toward
the end of the night, usually as one sent to him by one of the spg, had been the
routine since the spring, despite that the owner of the establishment had
ordered that he not be served that since the incident of May 17th. "
[I later learn that Jamison was known as Josh's
favorite drink and, at least after Dave's abduction, people were referring to it
as "Josh's
drink." During the
vigil the following week, asking me to point to the bottle, I was asked to
identify which liquor it was that Dave had been served by Laura, at that point
that night of Dave's abduction. Laura had made a point of interjecting,
instead of letting Dave answer me when I asked him what he was drinking, and
Laura telling me that Dave was drinking Jamison, Laura again speaking using a
singsong-y tone. When asked, during the vigil, I don't recall now if the
Jamison bottle was missing from the bar counter or not, but I was somehow able
to identify the drink that Dave had been served that night, possibly by saying
that the bottle wasn't there. At the time, I couldn't understand the
significance of that.]

from
08/09/02 - Re: Need to tell you please - panic:
Then the shot just before closing as I was trying to get Dave out of there myself. Sam, Dave's
"landlord" and protector somewhat, had already left. I don't know why and Dave didn't realize it either until I told him.
-
When I went over to David
and told
him that Sam
Libby had left, and that I’d drive him home, Laura Joyner intervened and I noticed that David suddenly
appeared to be very uneasy, nervous and/or frightened.
Other people who had been there started to
leave.
-
Josh
was now not in sight and it appeared to be now
only Laura Joyner, David and myself there,
although I now suspect that Josh was in the
men’s room. Laura Joyner motioned to David to
go into the men’s room. As I waited for Dave to come out of the
men's room, Laura
Joyner started to order me to leave, telling me
that I wasn’t going to drive David home. I kept calling in to David until he came
back out.
-
Dave
agreed to walk me to my car. When Dave tries to walk
outside with me Laura steps between us, breaking us away from each
other.
She, then, again told me to leave and she
said something and motioned to David to put on
one of the heavy sweaters that were on the top of
the golf machine
-
As I was ushered out the door by Laura
Joyner, I looked back and saw that Dave was now standing on the other side of the
pool table, opposite from Laura and was watching her carefully, as though
wondering/fearful of what may be about to happen to him
-
As
I followed Laura's orders to leave, my intention was to go up to
the police car that was usually parked at
the corner of the street that time of night and to tell the officer what was
happening
-
When I tried to go back into John's Cafe, I found that
Laura had locked the door and wouldn't respond to my knocking. When
I got into my car, which was parked in
front of the building, I watched from there and I could see that Laura
Joyner was angrily yelling at David.
-
I was very much shaken and couldn’t think
of what else to do, just then, so I just drove
home.
(Since it was about 1 a.m. that Dave was locked in the bar by Laura
Joyner, and she me ordered
out, the date of his abduction is sometimes given as 08/09/02)
